Rules for eating before swimming lessons! Why our baby shouldn't eat just before coming for swimming lessons...

Our baby is at a sensitive age (I think we all know this). However, he is capable enough to come and take lessons with us, in the pool even at 40 days old (isn't that awesome???)

Of course, he can't come hungry, but on the other hand, he can't come fed either (he could be too stressed or we could have a "rocket" launch into the pool)! So what is the "golden mean" when it comes to mealtime?

Let's take them one by one!

Our little one will use up a lot of energy in our lessons, since we play and swim all the time! If he is still breastfeeding (exclusively) then his last meal should be 2 hours before we enter the pool or a little less if it is a hungry baby! However, if your little one also drinks formula or eats creams, solid food, etc., then his last meal should be 2.5 – 3 hours!

Of course, after the above, we must never forget that:

  1. Children may drink water during class. And sometimes quite a lot, which is not at all alarming, but is completely normal during class. In this case, it doesn't matter how long ago they ate (of course, the closer the last meal was to class, the closer we are to a beautiful vomit...) That's why we must keep our distance from the meal.
  2. The children test their strength to the limits several times during the lesson (swimming to reach the toy they want so that the other child doesn't take it, swimming so that the whale-coach who is "chasing" them doesn't reach them, swimming to reach their dad/mom and "hit" them with the spaghetti-sword, etc.). If our child has eaten a little before entering the water, in combination with swallowing water, unfortunately there is still the risk of launching a small, sometimes "rocket".

So?? What do we do?

We respect STRICTLY food rules before swimming lesson and meal times before entering the water (2, 2.5 and 3 hours depending on what our child eats) and NOT We push them in class if we see that they are struggling, ESPECIALLY IF NOT wants to dive. So, if we see that our child coughs or is very upset after diving and goes to put his hand in his mouth, we gently take the hand from the mouth and continue the game in a gentler tone. There is no reason to worry!

So with these little "tricks", you will see that you will be able to enjoy water games without stress!! Swim without fear!

We'll see you on the water!!

Your coach knows… when you showered!

Why is showering before swimming lesson mandatory?

Ha! We've got you covered! We know what some of you think about showering before swimming lesson: “Come on, kid, we took a bath at home yesterday” or “Oops! We were late, who will notice?”

The truth is that the pool and certainly your coach will understand!

Of course, we're not crazy about making you soak in the shower until you come off your scales... We're talking about a short shower for you and your baby, with water temperature ranging from lukewarm to cold - the main goal of which is to prepare you for entering the pool!

The main reason is of course the hygiene regulations which we should NEVER forget and skip! Showering before swimming lesson removes hair from the hair that falls out, lint from the socks and any sweat! It is also a good idea to focus with a little more pressure on the armpits, legs and genitals. Very basic everything for the cleanliness of the pool!

Another – also important – reason is the body temperature. And this is because of the difference between the outside temperature and that of the pool! An adult needs approximately 15 minutes to adapt to a new temperature,

let alone in water, which tends to absorb our temperature. So imagine your baby wanting to be given a little extra reaction time!

So, even though you may be in a hurry or simply bored, remember that in essence, with a lukewarm shower you help maintain clean water in the pool and also quickly reach the right temperature. This way, you don't catch a cold and you can enjoy the game throughout the lesson, both you and your baby!

Chlorine – Bromine – Ozone. What is finally the best choice for the pool? 9 answers that will solve your questions!

Chlorine – Bromine – Ozone

Parents often ask us what exactly ozone and bromine are, which is better, and whether it is a good choice for disinfecting a pool, especially when it comes to baby swimming.

OZONE

1) What is ozone?

Ozone is a chemical compound consisting of 3 oxygen atoms. The presence of the third atom in the ozone molecule makes it particularly reactive, which is why it is often called “active oxygen”.

2) What are some of the applications of ozone?

Ozone, due to its activity, is widely used in swimming pool or spa water purification, waste purification, drinking water purification and air purification.

3) How does ozone used for water purification affect the air we breathe?

The amount of ozone produced by an ozone generator is minimal compared to the atmosphere we live in. When ozone is dissolved in water it is completely safe. Any excess ozone is immediately converted into oxygen. However, special care is required when breathing: we should not breathe concentrated ozone directly!

4) Can ozone harm me?

No. In the quantities required to be effective, ozone is harmless to the human body. However, breathing concentrated ozone can be dangerous and is strictly prohibited.

5) What is the smell of ozone?

Ozone has a distinctive odor that has been described as the smell after a thunderstorm.

6) Does ozone kill bacteria?

Yes. Ozone has a strong antimicrobial effect, one of the strongest in relation to similar substances. Yes, it helps in disinfecting a swimming pool, but it does not exempt us from the use of chlorine. Almost no physical or chemical element is fully sufficient and cannot stand completely alone except for chlorine. Only the combination of two or more alternative methods could cover the antimicrobial needs of a swimming pool.

7) Does ozone kill viruses?

Yes. Ozone can kill all known viruses in water or air.

8) What is the difference between ozone and chlorine?

In the quantities required for water purification, ozone has no particular odor, color or taste. It does not irritate the human body or wear out materials. Ozone purifies air and water quickly and effectively, 3000 times faster than chlorine. Ozone leaves no by-products except pure oxygen. On the contrary, chlorine leaves chemical by-products such as hypochlorous acid (harmful to our body) and related salts in the water, as well as fumes in the atmosphere (also harmful to our breathing).

9) Does water temperature affect ozone?

Large and sudden changes in water temperature can affect the activity of ozone. However, it is ideal as a primary or secondary disinfection element for temperatures that do not exceed 35 degrees Celsius.

BROMINE

Another method of chemical treatment of pool water is with Bromine. It is suitable for indoor pools, with higher water temperatures and in cases where we want to eliminate (almost) the presence of chlorine.

1) What is bromine?

Bromine (Br) is a chemical element similar to chlorine. It has no odor and, most importantly, does not irritate the eyes or skin.

2) What are some of the applications of bromine?

Bromine, due to its activity, is widely used in the purification of swimming pool or spa water.

3)Why is bromine considered reactive?

Because it is missing an electron to have an outer shell filled with eight electrons and to be very stable energetically, it "frantically searches" everywhere for the electron it is missing and is a strong oxidant.

4) Can bromine harm me?

Due to its high activity, bromine is not found free in nature, but combined with metals in the form of salts. In the quantities required to be effective, bromine is harmless to the human body. However, breathing concentrated bromine can be dangerous and is strictly prohibited.

5) What is the smell of ozone?

Bromine is odorless.

6) Does bromine kill bacteria?

Yes. The amines (organic compounds) produced in the water remain active, without binding the chlorine in the water, and this increases its disinfecting capacity.

7) Does bromine kill viruses?

Yes. The use of bromine as a disinfectant, yes, helps in the disinfection of a swimming pool but does not exempt us from the use of chlorine. Almost no physical or chemical element is fully sufficient and cannot stand completely alone except for chlorine. Only the combination of two or more alternative methods could cover the antimicrobial needs of a swimming pool. In fact, the chemical combination used for disinfection is 1/3 chlorine and 2/3 bromine. Also, shock chlorination remains as a process.

8) What is the difference between bromine and chlorine?

Bromine is more stable than chlorine in warm pool water, which is why many people now use it in their pools. The disadvantage is its significantly higher price compared to chlorine.

The reaction of bromine with the organic compounds in the water binds a small amount of bromine, unlike chlorine where a larger amount is bound (bound chlorine). This means that more free bromine (disinfectant) remains in the water.

In short, Bromine has the effectiveness of chlorine but at a higher cost. Due to the limited amount of chlorine it contains, it does not leave a chlorine smell in the room. It is recommended for use in indoor areas, small pools and spas.

9) Does water temperature affect bromine?

It is suitable for high temperatures. As a disinfectant it remains active even when the pH is greater than 7.8. (pH limit 7.2 – 7.8)

In conclusion the best choice for the swimming pools used by our babies and pregnant women, it is the combination of ozone - chlorine and UV rays. In the Arogi swimming pool we have sozone-chlorine combination while in Kalamaria swimming pool, ozone – chlorine – UV.  Although they are quite active, ozone and bromine cannot “stand” on their own. So there must be a percentage of chlorine for 100% of disinfection. In our swimming pools, the proportion of chlorine is equivalent to that of drinking water. So it is a low percentage – and therefore fewer undesirable substances in our water – while all the rest of the disinfection is done by ozone and bromine, which do not harm us! So swim without fear!

What is a double-lined swimsuit?

βρεφικό μαγιό κολύμβησης

Baby swimsuit! When we tell interested parents that they need to buy a double-lined baby swimsuit for baby swimming lessons, most of them have a look of wonder and surprise at the same time. It is certainly not armor, nor is it something difficult to obtain.

(You can ask us in which stores you will find it).

It's a simple swimsuit like all the others, with double reinforcement like a diaper to be absorbent in case something unexpected happens in the pool! So by wearing this baby swimsuit in combination with the waterproof diaper, we are sure that nothing will happen during the lesson that would require the lesson to be interrupted and all the water in the pool to be changed!!

Swimming pools and asthmatic children. They must exercise.

png;base6438d2304c25e0bb15

A few decades ago, the prevailing view was that an asthmatic child, in order to avoid any dangerous attacks, had to be limited or even excluded from sports activities.

This view has recently changed and it is considered that the asthmatic child, who is undergoing appropriate treatment, not only can, but must play sports. In fact, it is considered that his/her involvement in swimming can be done not only at a recreational level but can even reach the level of championship. A typical example is the American athlete Amy Van Duken, who won 4 gold medals in swimming at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, while suffering from bronchial asthma since the age of 18 months.

Swimming, compared to other sports, is considered the most suitable for asthmatic children, because the humid and warm air of the swimming pool protects them from the bronchospasm that usually occurs after the end of other sports. With swimming, asthmatic children improve:

  • their health status, because their cardiorespiratory capacity increases and they are psychologically stimulated,

  • they are not afraid and gain self-confidence,

  • they reduce their stress and feel like they are living a completely normal life.

In a study on "A swimming program in children with asthma" published in the Medical Journal Asthma in 2000, it was shown that the participation of 73 asthmatic children in a swimming program yielded the following results:

97% of the children enjoyed swimming
77% felt more confident
50% improved asthma severity
67% improved asthma control
46% reduced the number of visits to the doctor
64% reduced the number of hospital admissions
74% reduced the number of absences from school.

Ultimately, it can be said that swimming improves the quality of life of asthmatic children, as well as their parents.

A few tips for the world of water

Baby-Bath-300x225

Babies love being in the water! Having spent the first nine months of their lives floating in amniotic fluid in the womb, they love the liberating feeling that swimming offers, as the environment is familiar to them.

Here are some tips to prepare your baby for the world of water.

First step: the bathroom at home!

We all love to play with our babies and the fun this time can start at bath time, where the parent-child bond is strengthened. Immerse yourself in the water slowly, holding your baby on your chest. Smile at him, sing to him, talk to him, while maintaining reassuring eye contact.

For greater "bonding", breastfeeding in the bath will strengthen the security and connection with the water. Watch his reactions, respond and relax with your baby. All this will help you understand your baby's needs.

The next step: the swimming pool!

Everything good takes time and effort, so give your child time to get used to the noises, colors, splashing, and the general environment of the pool. Your baby's senses will be overwhelmed by sights, sounds, and happy voices, so don't be disappointed if he's hesitant at first. Give him time!

Here is a handy list of information, for you and your baby:

  • Find out the pool temperature!

The water should be warm and you will know your baby is getting cold when his nails and lips turn blue quickly, as they do in the sea. Warm him up by holding him, using your body temperature, and inform the pool manager.

  • Learn the pool policy (special swim diapers)

You will be asked to wear the special waterproof diaper and the special double-lined swimsuit. Regular diapers are not acceptable in a pool.

  • Get towels or bathrobes for the baby and for yourself.

  • When the baby does not react in the pool (does not move arms, legs) move yourself! Move your baby, make circles in the water, holding him by the arms and having eye contact, play, sing to him, talk to him, gently pour water on his head and face without scaring him. This helps him get used to and bond with the water.

  • Be pleasant and positive! Your child will receive the messages from you.

  • Your first session should not last more than 20-30 minutes.

  • After swimming and when you are both dressed, get him into the habit of drinking something to hydrate.

  • Do not feed it in the locker room as it is unhygienic.

Babies are hungry and tired after swimming, so they may eat and sleep more.

  • Babies lose heat from their heads very quickly, so take a hat with you for after bathing.

Swim regularly – it's a great family activity and the start of a healthy lifestyle together.
