The benefits of exercising in water
Water, with its special characteristics of hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy, offers the athlete the opportunity, depending on the intensity he can and does apply to the movement, to tailor the program to his needs.
Some of the benefits of aqua aerobics are:
- The buoyancy of water makes exercise accessible to everyone, reducing injuries. It also helps with better venous return and lymphatic function.
- The density of water is greater than that of atmospheric air. The body is subjected to three-dimensional pressure (hydrostatic pressure) and at the same time the deeper the movements, the more intense the exercise and the buoyancy created in the body. Thus we achieve multifaceted muscle training in a unique way as well as benefits to our circulatory system.
- The heart in water works at 10-13 beats per minute less than when performing exercise at the same intensity. This allows heart patients to participate in a form of exercise that will not strain their heart, but will strengthen their body.
- Flexibility in water is increased, so exercises are performed in a greater range of motion and muscles are trained at various angles that would otherwise be difficult.
- Water does not allow the body temperature to rise too much, allowing for better heat dissipation. Exercising in water is therefore more enjoyable for people with reduced thermoregulation abilities, such as the obese.
- At the end of the class, a feeling of relaxation for the mind and body is guaranteed!
