How We Had It!! Therapeutic Cooking…in Nature!
Family Edition
Sunday morning, May 7th, and with great enthusiasm and joy, we headed up to the suburban forest of Thessaloniki. For the first time, we went with our children to cook in a real refuge in the forest!!
We started with a guided tour through the forest, always led by our experienced outdoor living instructor and host Yannis, where we admired the countless beauties of nature, but also received important information about survival, but also... about the secrets of the forest!!
Then, we went to our shelter, where our instructor, Yannis, informed us about mountain survival, fire management, and cooking meals with very few ingredients. One of the meals - and the one we prepared - was Bannock (bread made by Canadian natives with few ingredients). Children and parents enthusiastically participated in the preparation and making of the subsistence bread!
Also, dough recipes that were cooked: long-lasting galettes, bread baked on wood without utensils, beer bread, sourdough bread in cast iron pans, cornmeal porridge, and unleavened bread in the ashes.
Knowledge is power in a world that is constantly seeking and adding. Understanding these systems of thought is abstraction and simplicity.

Then it was time to cook our own recipes with the theme: Pizzas!!!
You can understand how crazy the kids (and parents of course) were since it is one of everyone's favorite foods. The outdoor kitchen that had been set up, exclusively for us, was filled with flour, pasta and pizza ingredients!!! Then, we baked them in the traditional way in the shelter's outdoor built oven.
The reasonable question everyone has is…where are the photos of the pizzas??? You understand that we didn't even have time to take photos!! Young and old, with boundless enthusiasm and anxiety for the result of the cooking, we ate the pizzas straight away as soon as they came out of the oven!!
All participants are looking forward to the next time we cook in nature... we are waiting for you all again, as well as those of you who didn't make it this time!
… Stay tuned!
